What is Trailblazing English?

Trailblazing English (TE) is a progressive variation of English whose purpose is to Honor All In Language (HAIL). TE speakers seek to establish linguistic justice by providing respectful words for individuals in demographic groups who have been maligned or ignored over the centuries by Conventional English (CE).

Trailblazing English terms come from a number of sources. Some of them may be new to you; others, you may have seen or heard before — even adopted already! Links to the three Trailbliazing English Glossaries below can be found on the dropdown menu to this page:

  • The Philogyny Glossary identifies those Conventional English words whose meanings, spellings, and/or etymologies are misogynistic and replaces them with honorable alternatives;

  • The GENeral Inclusion Glossary provides gender inclusive/neutral alternatives to androcentric (“man-centric”) language1; and

  • The Nonbinary Glossary renders gender-variant, genderfluid, and nonbinary people linguistically visible by offering words that may be used by and for them, especially in regards to their familial relationships.

  1. While it is acknowledged that the word “man” once referred to all humin beings, Trailblazing English holds that this definition ceased to be acceptable when the Conventional English word for a male person “wē̆pman” was shortened to simply “man.”
