What is Trailblazing English?
Trailblazing English (TE) is part of a global evolution to make the world’s languages more inclusive of all. Sometimes renovative, sometimes innovative, but always ethical, TE vocabulary and spelling promote linguistic justice by providing dignified words for members of demographic groups that have been historically maligned or ignored by Conventional English (CE).
Trailblazing English incorporates gender-neutral terms from other languages as well as revived and newly coined English words, a number of which have roots stretching back to Proto-Indo-European. Some of this vocabulary may be new to you, while some you may have come across elsewhere or have adopted already. If so, good for you! TE has three glossaries. A description and hyperlink to each is included below:
- Leading Ladies Glossary The shortest of the three glossaries is probably the most eyebrow-raising, as it not only identifies three common Conventional English words that Trailblazing English deems unacceptable but also boldy replaces them with powerful and respectful alternatives. As a bonus, it introduces two words that refer to uniquely feminine power.
- General Inclusion Glossary provides twelve Gender All-Inclusive or Neutral (GAIN) alternatives to androcentric language1 that can be used by and apply to all people in general.
- Nonbinary Visibility Glossary with nineteen entries, this glossary provides much needed linguistical visibility to gender-variant, genderfluid, and nonbinary people by offering respectful words that may be used by, for, and about them, especially in regards to family relationships.
- While it is acknowledged that the word “man” once referred to all humin beings, Trailblazing English speakers hold that this definition ceased to be acceptable when the Conventional English word for a male person “wē̆pman” was shortened to simply “man.”
